How Condition Grading Works on Patina: A Plain English Guide
Words by Heather June Coombs
The reissue is fine. The original is better. Here is why.
Buying pre-owned comes with a necessary question: what condition is it actually in? Descriptions vary wildly between sellers. One person's 'good' might be another's 'distressed'. This ambiguity breeds distrust and makes buying online a gamble. On Patina, we use a clear, tiered grading system. It's not a suggestion; it's a standard.
The Patina Standard: More Than Just Words
We've all seen 'worn once or twice' and received something that clearly lived through a decade of festivals. That won't happen here. Our grading system is designed to be universal, applying across clothing, accessories, and music. It’s built on objective metrics, not subjective interpretation. Buyers rely on it, and sellers must adhere to it.
Every item listed on Patina undergoes a review to confirm its condition against the seller's description. Discrepancies get flagged. This is not about being particular; it's about setting an expectation and meeting it. A grade on Patina means something concrete.
This system protects buyers from misrepresentation and gives sellers a clear framework to work within. It removes the guesswork that plagues much of the pre-owned market.
New With Tags (NWT)
This is straightforward. The item is unworn, unused, and still has its original retail tags attached. This includes original packaging where applicable, such as shoeboxes, dust bags, or vinyl sleeves with shrink wrap and download codes intact.
It's not just 'new' in the sense of being pristine; it must literally be as you'd buy it from a shop, complete with all identifiers. No missing tags, no removed packaging, no signs of handling beyond what's necessary for inspection. If a tag is missing, it’s not NWT.
Excellent
Excellent condition means the item has been worn or used, but shows minimal signs of wear. Think of it as almost new, but not quite. There might be slight creasing on trainers, or a very faint mark that's not noticeable without close inspection. For clothing, this could mean a single wash. For vinyl, the cover might have minor shelf wear, or the record itself could have one or two entirely superficial hairlines that don't affect play.
This is where the majority of high-quality pre-owned items sit. They still look very fresh and have plenty of life left. Any wear should be aesthetic and barely visible, not structural or functional.

Very Good
An item in very good condition shows moderate signs of wear that are consistent with regular, but careful, use. These signs of wear are noticeable on closer inspection, but do not detract significantly from the item's overall appearance or function.
This could be light bobbling on a jumper, slight fading on denim, or minor scuffs on the soles of shoes. For vinyl, there might be some ring wear on the sleeve or surface marks that might produce occasional slight background noise but no skips or major distortion. It's an item that has been enjoyed, but remains entirely presentable and functional.
Good
When something is graded 'Good', it means it shows clear signs of wear and tear, but remains perfectly functional and presentable. The wear is more substantial than 'Very Good' but has no major flaws that would affect its utility. There might be some colour fade, small snags, or more noticeable wear on cuffs and collars for clothing. Shoes might have more prominent scuffing and sole wear. Vinyl might have more noticeable surface noise, but still plays through without significant issues. There would be no deep scratches or skips.
This category is for items that are still perfectly serviceable and have a lot of wear left, but won't be mistaken for new. They offer good value for money and are ideal for daily use.
What We Don't Accept
Patina does not list items that are heavily damaged, stained, ripped beyond repair, or otherwise significantly compromised. We are a marketplace for considered pre-owned, not a repository for worn-out goods. Any item failing to meet a minimum standard of 'Good' will be rejected.
This means no major structural damage, no irreparable stains, no broken zips, no missing buttons that cannot be easily replaced, and no extensive pilling or holes. For vinyl, this means no warping, no deep scratches that cause repeats or skips, and no covers that are heavily torn or water-damaged. We aim for quality, even in our lowest grade.
Understanding these grades is key to buying on Patina. It sets a common language, ensuring that what you see described is what you actually get. It removes the ambiguity, making buying pre-owned the sensible choice, not a risk.
The system is in place to provide confidence. Sellers know what's expected, and buyers know what to expect. That's the baseline for a reliable pre-owned market.
